18/05/2017 : Highlights from the May Sale

Here are some of the highlights from the May Auction of Antiques & Fine Arts with Asian Arts & Musical Instruments

May's auction might not have been as large as April's but there was still a huge amount of interest in the lots. As well as the people frequenting The Cheshire Saleroom there a very large number of international buyers with over 1100 bidding through www.the-saleroom.com

There were a number of items that achieved a very respectable and yet surprising hammer price with competitive bidding going on between the room and the virtual community.

This unsuspecting looking item was one of the highlights of the auction. It is an 18th century Indo-Portuguese table top cabinet with bone inlaid detail and Vizagapatam style panels to the front of drawers. Initially it had been estimated at £50 -£80 but achieved an astronimcal £6600! The competition was so fierce for this item that we were almost 20 minutes into the auction before we reached lot number three,

Obviously a Musical Instrument auction couldn't go by without a great collection of stringed instruments, as well as a range of double bass, cello's and violas, there was some wonderful examples of violins. This good full size violin labelled 'E. Panormo, 1872' was valued at £2000 - £3000 but realised £6600.

A Chinese late Ming gilt carved wooden figure of seated Buddha Amitabha was one of the lots which made up the Asian Arts section of the auction. This beautiful ornate figure made it's estimate of £3000.
