06/06/2009 : The John Holt Collection
PUBLIC AUCTION TO BE HELD ON THE PREMISES, SIDDINGTON, Nr MACCLESFIELD, CHESHIRE The John Holt Collection SATURDAY 6th June 2009
Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers are pleased to announce an auction of one man’s unique lifetime collection, including advertising signs and other vintage collectables, toys, scales & weights and much more.
John Holt has been collecting for over 60 years, since around 1944 when he was posted in India & Burma. His first purchase was a set of Burmese animal-shaped weights, bought in a bazaar. This was the first of many purchases of weights and measures, culminating in the purchase of a huge amount of Local Authority Weights & Measures when they were sold off in 1970 – Mr Holt bought all the Cheshire weights & measures for the princely sum of £33,000 as well as most of the others! Several of these Cheshire weights are to be included in the auction, as well as an extremely rare set of 3-pan ladder scales.
Demobbed in 1946/1947, John Holt returned to the UK and used his £800 savings to start his own business “John Holt Motor Bodybuilders Ltd”, building customised cabs and bodies for all commercial vehicles. The business was a great success and ended up with around 40 employees.
The vehicle connection explains Mr Holt’s interest in vintage automobilia, of which there is an excellent selection including his favourite items – his collection of petrol globes.
Mr Holt has decided to sell his treasured collection due to old age and the proceeds will be divided amongst animal and cancer charities.
He chose Adam Partridge to handle the auction having been a keen viewer of antiques television programmes and an admirer of Mr Partridge’s manner, auctioneering style and accurate valuations.
The sale will be held in a marquee on the premises on Saturday 6th June, starting at 10.30am, with viewing the day prior from 12-8pm. All lots will be illustrated online at www.adampartridge.co.uk and live internet bidding will also be available via www.the-saleroom.com, with live video feed.
