21/06/2016 : Queen’s Bodyguard\'s Archive Coming To Auction
On Thursday 30th June Adam Partridge Auctioneers will be offering an extraordinary archive relating to Inspector Alexander Usher. Usher served on the Metropolitan Police Force for 32 years and was best friends with Fabian of the Yard, rising through the ranks of Sergeant and Station Sergeant to Inspector.
In 1939 he was selected for protection duty, travelling with members of the Royal Family before being appointed No. 1 Shadow to Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth in May 1944. He accompanied Her Majesty on all private and official trips both in this country and abroad, including the very special engagements of her wedding to Prince Philip, and the subsequent honeymoon.
Included in the archive is a silver cigarette case bearing the etched signatures of HRH Queen Elizabeth and HRH Prince Philip presented when Usher retired in 1951, three Christmas cards signed by HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, a 1965 Christmas card signed by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, a silver Royal Victorian Medal with citation, a Coronation Medal, and two folders of ephemera. Amongst the ephemera are dozens of photographs depicting Usher on official duty with the Royal Family, as well as dozens of other official photographs.
Adam Partridge will be conducting the sale and said “When such a unique group of items come to auction, it is very difficult to be accurate with an auction estimate. Our guide is £2,000 - £4,000, but in this, the Queen’s 90th birthday year, and with such personal items and photographs, we hope a Royal fanatic will dig deep to buy the collection!”
The items will be sold at Adam Partridge’s Macclesfield branch on the 30th June.
