14/09/2009 : NEW HOUSE RECORD ; Chinese libation cup brings £27,000
A new house record was achieved on 10th September when a Chinese carved rhinoceros horn libation cup on wooden stand was sold for £27,000, surpassing the previous record of £14,400 for a Wedgwood Fairyland lustre vase sold in March.
The libation cup was discovered by Adam Partridge on a routine visit to inspect a house contents in Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire. It was extensively marketed in The Antiques Trade Gazette and online; despite some damage, we were inundated with enquiries, mainly from Chinese buyers.
After brisk bidding on the internet and 12 telephone lines, the hammer fell at £27,000, to a Chinese buyer based in London.
