21/03/2013 : Last call for entries

Monday 25th March is the closing date for entries to the next sale which is Antiques & Fine Art with Sporting and Militaria.

Already consigned is a Gallantry medal group awarded to Sergeant Joseph Horrocks which includes a Military Medal for his act of bravery during World War II.

At the time, Widnes man Horrocks was a Corporal in the South Lancashire regiment. His Battalion were involved in the Battle of Overloon, named after the Dutch village of Overloon where it took place between 30th September and 18th October 1944. After the battle, Horrocks’ commanding officer submitted the following recommendation that he should receive the medal:

Newspaper clipping about Joseph Horrocks“On 15th October 1944 Cpl. Horrocks took part in an attack on the woods west of Overloon. His company came under heavy machine gun fire from the immediate front and right flank. Cpl. Horrocks received wounds in his leg which rendered it useless. The remaining men of his bren group were already casualties. In spite of his useless leg Cpl. Horrocks got hold of the LMG [Light Machine Gun] and fired back. He then advanced approx 150 yards by dragging himself along. With the aid of fire produced solely by Cpl. Horrocks his platoon were able to infiltrate forward. Later, when with the aid of tanks the platoon caught up, it was found that Cpl. Horrocks had fainted by the side of his gun. His action and firm determination set a very high example to the remainder of his platoon.”

1,878 Allied soldiers lost their lives at the battle, the vast majority of those being British, but that number isn’t as high as it could have been if it weren’t for Cpl. Horrocks’ actions.

The medal group also includes the Defence Medal, the War Medal, the France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 Star, along with various documents about the medal and Horrocks. They will be coming up in the sale which takes place on the 18th & 19th April.

This is just one of many medal groups that will be coming up in the sale including 5 WWI Gallantry groups and a rare DSO MBE group.

If you have anything you'd like to consign, come along to our next valuation day on Monday 25th March from 9:30am - 12:30pm and 5:30pm - 7:30pm.
