30/10/2011 : Chinese Vase brings £60,000 in record auction

A Chinese vase sold for £60,000 on Friday 28th October. Dating from the Jiaqing period (1796-1820), the vase measured 32cm in height and had been damaged to the rim. It had been disregarded by the owner, whose mother had used it as an ashtray for many years, so was brought along to a valuation day.

Experts at the auction house recognised the rarity of the vase and marketed it to the world in a specialist auction of Asian Art which also saw some other astonishing results, notably £23,000 for a Chinese planter (also damaged), discovered in a local cottage and £19,800 for a Chinese settle which auctioneer Adam Partridge noticed when visiting a pub, on a valuation appointment he hastens to add! It had been in regular use there for over 40 years!

Other prices included £3300 for a pair of wall plaques, £3100 for a magnificent Chinese ivory carving, £2400 for a set of Indian paintings, £2200 for a jade brush rest, £2100 for an ivory fan and the same price for an erotic carving.

The vase was a fitting highlight to the two-day auction of over 2100 lots held on Thursday & Friday 27th/28th October, commemorating three years since the auction house first opened.

Over a third of a million pounds changed hands with interest from all around the world including over 700 people bidding live on the internet.

20th century items continue to be popular as several results indicated.
A painting by Welsh artist Donald McIntyre (died 2009) brought £3500, a Moorcroft vase £2400 and a 1970ís rosewood and chrome sideboard sold for £2300. A silver tray dated 1926 was bid to £1950, a 2004 gold coin collection £1700 and a painting by Stockport artist Trevor Grimshaw (died 2001) sold for £1550.
