As autumn beckons and Christmas looms, we begin a very busy final quarter of 2014 with an enormous fine art sale featuring a vast array of fine and interesting objects to titillate collectors, connoisseurs and dealers alike. A good small collection of Black Forest carvings appear in the first ten lots followed by a very interesting run of fine collectables including a pair of carved Blue John herons (£2,000-£3,000) and a fine French c.1860 hand painted fan. Mechanical music and a small collection of musical instruments, names for the cylinder musical boxes include Neyret Freres and Ducommun Girod and estimates range from £400-£2,000.
We will also offer a rather special painting by one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, Christopher Wood (1901-1930). This large oil on canvas has impeccable provenance, appearing illustrated in Christie’s catalogue of Modern British Paintings for their sale on Friday May 11th 1973. The current owner purchased it from this sale and has owned it ever since. It carries an estimate of £40,000-£60,000.
Another highlight of the sale is a collection of diamonds from a North Manchester estate. Loose stones (pictured above) of 4.5 carats to 2.5 carats are mostly near flawless and will be offered amongst a wonderful collection of jewellery including pieces by Cartier, Boodles (platinum and diamond ‘Waterfall’ necklace, est. £7,000-£10,000), and a good collection of wristwatches for ladies and gentlemen, by makers including Rolex, Bueche Girod, Baume Mercier, Omega, Cartier, Chopard and Longines, also featuring a rare 1957 Rolex ‘James Bond’ Submariner wristwatch.
Also offered for sale are over 360 lots of furniture, a good collection of taxidermy, several fine longcase clocks and a lovely Art Nouveau mantle clock, ceramics, a good collection of pistols and antique swords, a fine collection of bronze figures and much more.
