As the festive season gains momentum towards Christmas, The Cheshire Saleroom prepares itself for the final sale of 2014, with over 2300 lots. The ‘toy’ section ever present in the December catalogue is bolstered by a single owner doll collection assembled by the late Betty Young over 40 years. Included in this extensive collection are a wide variety of bisque porcelain dolls from various factories across Europe, 19th century wax dolls, doll moulds, clothing and related articles and even a model WWI military hospital ward for dolls, made by a disabled lady to help raise funds to help wounded soldiers during and after the war.
Other toys include a good collection of early (mostly boxed) die cast vehicles from the 40s (illustrated above), model trains, early Britain’s lead figures and other items of ‘juvenalia’.
Of course the usual selection of fine and unusual art and antiques adorn the saleroom. A fine selection of jewellery includes an impressive diamond bracelet of 26 carats in total (£10,000-£15,000), diamond solitaire rings from 1-4 carats, diamond necklaces and even a pair of stylish Lalique cufflinks for the man who has everything! Silver too is well represented, with various Georgian objects including a fine pair of Corinthian column candlesticks dating to the early part of the reign of King George III.
There is also a large collection of books to be offered, from Ian Fleming James Bond first editions to a 17th century first edition Monasticon Anglicanum. 40 of the 138 lots of books offered are from the library of Professor Richard Britnell, one of the foremost economic historians.
It wouldn’t be a December sale without wine whisky and other spirits. Good collectors’ bottles are to be sold including Erte Cognac and Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac and also a large selection of wines from across the world, some for the collector and some ready for drinking over Christmas!
