Box500 lots of Chinese and Japanese works of art kicks off day two. A good selection of Chinese porcelain, silver, jade and ivory includes a massive silver work box by Khe Cheong and a finely carved nephrite jade buffalo. The Japanese section includes some of the finest Satsuma ware available - a bowl very similar to an example in the V&A museum by Yabu Meizan and a finely decorated bowl by Kinkozan to name a couple. A wonderful collection of Japanese ivories is also in this sale, some Tokyo school.

There is a fantastic and varied selection of objects throughout the usual sections from the skull of a hippopotamus named Nicholas (£400-£600) to a huge and important silver candleabrum by Robert Garrard (£8,000-£12,000). From the same home as the Garrard candleabrum came another impressive piece of silver; a centrepiece by Edward Barnard and John Barnard and dated London 1853, surmounted with three figures of a sailor, a miner and a figure representing navigation emblematic of trade, industry and empire. Research with the assistance of the V&A museum showed that this order was placed on February 26th 1853 by the jeweller and retailer Joseph Mayer of Liverpool.

Also in the sale is the collection of the late Eleanor Schofield. Eleanor was a well-known local collector, dealer and academic. She owned a shop, “Knutsford Road Antiques” in Wilmslow from c.1977 to 1983, she was a member of the Northern Ceramics Society for many years and a regular lecturer for around sixty years. Her collection was amassed over a lifetime since her marriage in 1946 and we are delighted to be able to present it to the market.
