An unusual large 19th century singing bird cage automaton, the bird with original yellow and black plumage, the domed cage with central loop handle and three cast ornamental bands on circular gilt wooden waisted base with scallop and foliate decoration above three turned supports, height 54.5cm. Purchased at Christies, South Kensington, Mechanical Music, Tools and Technical Apparatus sale 16th April 1998, lot 170.

Condition Report

In working order, bird with wear to feathers particularly head and breast, claws to right leg are missing and there are losses to left leg, general surface wear, tarnish and mild dirt throughout the cage both upper part and base, wear to the base topped velvet, areas of repainting in the waisted part of the base, rubbing to the paint, particularly to the edges and raised parts, with key.
