JOHN FREDERICK HERRING SR (1795-1865); oil 'Epsom Derby, 1834', featuring Plenipotentiary, winner of the 1834 Derby, signed, inscribed and dated 1834, bearing Thomas Agnew & Sons label verso, 55 x 75cm, framed and glazed. Sold with a gilt tooled, red leather key to the painting which also details previous winners and placed horses for the Derby, St. Leger, 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas. Provenance: detailed on the vendor's grandfather's inventory of chattels, produced in 1934, and has remained in the family ever since.

We strongly suggest viewing this painting in the flesh, some craquelure throughout however as the piece has been displayed behind glass, the colours have remained strong.

Condition Report

The picture is glazed both front and back and whilst mounted in the round the reverse indicates that the canvas is a rectangular canvas, some light craquelure in parts but overall in good condition.

Condition Report

The signature is lower centre and just above this is a three centimetre tear to the canvas, the left hand horse has a tear through the leg approx 3 x 1cm, there is also an old repair to top left hand corner which has a visible repair from the back, otherwise light surface wear.
